Several days ago as I was watching The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Ellen's comic monologue was on the subject of "What are Teens Saying?". Her routine included many text message abbreviations such as BFF, LOL,OMG, etc. She concluded with her usual humor but it left me thinking...who started this phenomenon?
Most teenagers in the text and IM generation will take most of the credit and teachers blame these teens for the downfall of literacy. I say they are both wrong.
In 1926 A.A. Milne, wrote the book Winnie the Pooh. Parents around the world and through out the generations endeared their children to the characters of the book as well as all the Pooh books. Later movies and cartoons of Pooh and his friends in the 100 acre woods were becoming staples in a mulitude of households.
Could A.A. Milne in 1926 have started and we as parents unwittingly been the contributing factor in the abbreviated world of text? I say, Absolutely!
As I let you contemplate; I leave you with this thought...BLAME IT ON TIGGER!
